Wii Minority Report Finger Style

November 27th, 2007 · by David Bradley

Want to be able to track finger movements Minority Report style? All you need according to Johnny Lee of Carnegie Mellon University is an infra-red LED array and some reflective tape the kind of items you can pick up easy at your local Radio Shack or online. With those you can track your fingers in thin air using the Wii remote control. The trick is to make your fingers emit infra-red light more than they usually do. The Wii remote uses Bluetooth, so you can easily hook it up to a Bluetooth savvy PC.

Lee points out that fatal flaw in Minority Report style computer control, and that is that all that hand-waving can be quite tiring. He says it’s fun but is unlikely to catch on for productivity applications. But, with the advent of the Wii, it is more likely that it will indeed catch on, the next generation of computer users coming out of kindergarten are already building up their strength with the Wii sports pack, after all.

If only I could find a Wii; they are like gold dust. I noticed that CSI Miami has taken to using the Minority Report approach.
