What on Earth is Agloco?

Anyone who reads the likes of JohnChow will know all about Agloco networks, he waxes lyrical frequently on how much money there might be to be make from such a global community. I’m not sure I have ever read anything from the great bloggers who cover site monetization about what all these programs actually offer their readers though, other than a chance to turn green with envy at the apparently vast sums of cash that are being generated by clicks and links and affiliate strings.
So, what is Agloco and why should you care that Sig Figs is affiliated with it? Well, unlike a text link or a Google ad, where your click or visit is a one-way transaction, you click a link, the site gets a couple of cents, Agloco provides a two-way perspective. Like Alexa before it, Agloco is a browser toolbar, but this time with a difference. Install it, and keep it running while you surf and you will accrue $$$$ (well, maybe not $$$$, but a few $$$ in a potential shareholding) with no added effort on your part. Sounds like a get-rich quick scam? Well, it isn’t. You are not going to get-rich-quick with Agloco, despite what some bloggers running their affiliate program claim, but you will make a few bucks that you wouldn’t otherwise have made.
But, what’s in it for Agloco, why would they pay you to surf? Well, like all browser toolbars, there is some reporting back to base of your surfing habits, but more than that the company is trying to build a community (yes, I know more web 2.0 shenanigans). Check out this post from Stephen Fung, if you are at all worried about the issue of spyware, or go back to John Chow’s site for reassurance if you must. It is the existence of this community that makes Agloco truly different though as the community itself owns Agloco, so the more you are involved, the bigger your share and the better your chances of turning that $ or $$ into $$$, or even $$$$.
By the way, for those who care, the Significant Figures site brings in not nearly enough for me to live the kind of luxury lifestyle of those big monetizers out there, but it does cover its hosting costs…thankfully. Let me know how you get on with the Agloco toolbar and if it starts paying your bills, you can buy me a beer!
UPDATE: Agloco has allegedly gone down the tubes.

I think patience is the key. When I was first looking for a free home ISP, I signed up with one that claimed to be a community of shareholders (this was back in the mid-90s). If you persuaded others to sign-up you got extra shares. I accumulated quite a few over the course of a year or so, when the company finally floated on the stock market turned out those shares were worth very little… However, last time I looked they’d rocketed, making my holding worth almost $2000. Is that the kind of value a patient agloco user might hope for? I don’t know, but it’s free to use so anything you “earn” is essentially profit.
