What is ctfmon.exe?

If you use a Windows machine, no doubt you’re familiar with the three-finger shuffle – control-alt-delete. This no longer reboots your PC, but brings up Windows Task Manager. You’ll have seen countless entries in the processes list in Task Manager such as “svchost.exe“, “jusched.exe”, and “ctfmon.exe” and perhaps wondered what all that stuff running behind the scenes actually does.
Well, as discussed previously svchost.exe is “a generic host process”. But, what about ctfmon.exe, it sounds like maybe it’s monitoring something, could it be a virus, a trojan or a worm perhaps?
When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs. It’s there to activate the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. It’s harmless and best left to itself. But, you can uninstall the associated services – see this MS KnowledgeBase entry.
If you’re curious about any other entries you see when you open Task Manager, then leave a comment here giving precise details and the name of the entry and I’ll see what I can find out about it for you.
