Taking Control of Your GMail Contacts
October 30th, 2007 · by David Bradley
Is your GMail/GTalk contacts list getting out of hand, is it a burgeoning list of all and sundry with whom you just happened to have had a minor IM or email exchange. As you probably know, Gmail/talk automatically adds correspondents as contacts. You can switch this off by default, but what do you do with the enormous list you already created?
Amit Agarwal on Digital Inspiration had an idea and offers a fix on his site. He also made a little video, which you can watch below, far more interesting than reading the solution and worrying about your own Gcontacts list is to play a name check game with Amit’s scrolling list.
Among the glitterati, I spotted Wordpress guru Lorelle van Fossen, imified (of ping and publish fame, Made in Brazil Blog, Philipp Lenssen (presumably the Google Blogoscoped guy), freelance graphic designer Ilker Yoldas, and a many others whose names I’ve heard and who have on occasion even appeared in my own Gcontacts list. You might spot some familiar names yourself. Post them in the comments box below if you do.

Regarding the launch of IMAP on GMail, give it a try from your email client even if you don’t see the IMAP tag in your GMail settings. I just created a new account in Thunderbird for my GMail account, which is not yet showing IMAP option and was able to synchronize email and contacts within a matter of seconds despite this.
