Take a Break in Secunia

September 5th, 2007 · by David Bradley

No, Secunia is not some obscure tropical island destination in the Indian Ocean, it is a security site that comes with a built in system scanner that can alert you to out of date software installations on your machine and point out security vulnerabilities. It also gives you the skinny on how to upgrade quickly and easily.

I ran the basic, default, scan on my system and it took just 41 seconds to search through the standard installations of QuickTime, Windows, Office, Acrobat, Opera, WinZip, Java, Flash etc that all sit on my machine unchanged, sometimes months at a time.

Almost all the programs were out of date, with the exception of XP and Office, amazingly perhaps, but then Microsoft issues so many patches it would be very hard to stay out of date with their products for very long.

Anyway, the machine is nice and clean and fresh now. I strongly suggest you check out the secunia software security applet and tighten up your system security too.
