SQT: Take Control of Explorer

March 1st, 2008 · by David Bradley

Control keyCountless times I choose “Open…”, “Save As…” or whatever other Windows file explorer function from within a program only to discover that the order of the files and folders has reverted to some seemingly random state. Here’s how to make sure files and folders in any Windows dialog box or File Explorer are always exactly as you want them.

Open an instance of File Explorer (or File Manager) set the file order exactly how you want it (perhaps you prefer reverse date order, or file type rather than alphabetical), then press the Control key and click the X in the top right to close the box. Without the Ctrl key nothing is necessarily saved across different programs or sessions. Ctrl is the key.

Next week’s SQT offers a quick tip on buttonizing your bookmarks, grab the Sig Figs RSS newsfeed so you don’t miss it
