(05:33:21 AM) Amanda: Welcome to Host Live Chat. My name is Amanda and I would be happy to help you.
(05:34:50 AM) David: Spotted an FTP error pointing to “remotetreechildren.net” is that another domain on my shared hosting, has my site been hacked?
(05:36:17 AM) Amanda: I am looking into this.
(05:36:24 AM) David: thx
(05:36:39 AM) David: Just doing an IP neighbour search myself…
(05:38:16 AM) Amanda: So this is not within your account, its just a random domain?
(05:38:52 AM) David: It’s nothing to do with me. When I try to open a file on my server via FTP it pops up an error message saying server not found and pointing to remotetreechildren.net
(05:40:07 AM) David: remotetreechildren.net seems to be on IP address 64.202.189.170 Is that one of your IP addresses?
(05:40:18 AM) Amanda: I am checking.
(05:43:26 AM) Amanda: This is not on our servers.
(05:43:30 AM) Amanda: I’m trying to find information on this.
(05:47:23 AM) Amanda: The only answer for this that if the site was randomly added to the account at some point.
(05:47:27 AM) David: I searched for “remote tree children” and see it’s the name of a band. Odd.
(05:47:50 AM) David: I also discovered that the term “remotetreechildren” is javascript code. Looks like my FTP client is mistakenly adding “.net” to the term.
(05:47:59 AM) David: So, there’s nothing awry at all, I wasn’t hacked.
(05:48:16 AM) Amanda: That’s good to hear.
(05:48:20 AM) David: I solved the problem myself, but thanks for being there to listen!

NB, although I pride myself on keeping up to date with the latest bands, I had not heard of Remote Tree Children until I saw the term in my FTP error log and got worried about why their website was appearing in my site’s FTP system. Especially as the term “prepare to be pwned b*tch” featured prominently on their site. Very odd.
By the way, I wasn’t on host chat at 5:30 in the morning UK time, it was after 10am…
