Quick fix for hanging Firefox

October 21st, 2011 by David Bradley >> 1 Comment

Firefox seems to frequently stutter or lag while doing seemingly trivial tasks like scrolling or even typing, you get a “Not Responding” message that can last for a few seconds, even as long as a moment. Darth Continent has a quick fix that involves creating a short cut to start Firefox from the command line and assign it to a specific core on your multi-core CPU (you do have a multicore CPU don’t you, this won’t work if not).

It is possible to assign FF to a specific core, or more reasonably remove one of them via the set affinity tab in Task Manager. But, that’s not sticky and you have to redo it every time you bring your PC out of standby, hibernation or reboot. Darth’s method is a little more involved and only lets you assign the program to one core, but it’s worked perfectly for me so far, no more hanging around waiting for a Fox.
