One More Reason to Use OpenDNS
August 1st, 2008 · by David Bradley >> 1 Comment
A new threat to Internet security emerged recently involving the DNS lookup system that converts the addresses (e.g. http://www.sciencetext.com) that you see in your browser address bar into the internet protocol (IP) number (e.g. 69.89.27.226) that is used to actually find the website in question. The loophole allows malicious software or an individual to spoof almost any website and potentially gain access to your computer using malware.
Software companies and internet service providers (ISPs) are striving to fix the problem but there are still a lot of DNS name servers that remain unpatched. To check whether your ISP (and thence you) are vulnerable check out the http://www.doxpara.com/” site. It has a simple tool that does a DNS cross-check and tells you whether it was able to spoof an IP address on your system.
Whether the Doxpara site tells you you are safe or not, using the OpenDNS system instead of your ISP’s DNS servers will avoid such security issues altogether as well as having several other benefits.

It’s official, the much discussed and anticipated OpenDNS Amsterdam data center is now up and running. OpenDNS is anycasted so need to change any settings, but you pay notice faster DNS lookups, which means faster browsing.
