NIST and feet…

April 7th, 2005 by David Bradley >> No Comments

A recent Royal Society meeting for which David Bradley is currently writing a summary report discussed the important matter of the fundamental constants, units and metrology in general…an issue dear to the heart of the Significant Figures blog. At one point during the meeting the Chairman announced that an object found abandoned at the venue had been handed in to RS lost property. The item in question quite aptly was a pedometer. Having asked the members of the audience whether anyone had lost such a device, the Chairman checked the back for identifying markings…and discovered to his delight that the device had been calibrated by an organisation well represented among the meeting’s speakers and audience, NIST…but in feet, he quipped.
