Make Twitter Safe

September 18th, 2008 · by David Bradley

twitter-safeTwitter banned several users a while back, it could happen at any time for no good reason. Imagine it: you clear your metaphorical throat ready to tweet and realize you cannot login, you’re account has been suspended. You might be able to persuade the powers that be to give you a second chance, but as with all these social media applications, it’s possible that all is lost.

This is where TwitterSafe - if used in advance of any dire happenings to your Twitter account - comes to the rescue. Put simply, it backs up your followers, adds them to the TwitterVault, but more importantly allows you to download your data as a spreadsheet-type CSV file, which can be imported into Google Docs, or Excel. So, if the worst happens and you lose your Twitter account at least you can get back in touch with your followers and either ping them from Plurk or Pownce or from the shiny new Twitter account you created to replace the dead.

There’s not actually that much to using TwitterSafe, you login with your Twitter username and pasword (it uses the API) and basically click the “Run Backup!” button, download the CSV file to your hard disk and repeat at regular intervals to keep your backup current. Do it now, while you’re account is alive and tweeting; now you’re ready to survive the next Black Tweetsday.

Of course, what we need now is a FaceSaver, a PlurkPocket, LinkedIn armor, and other backup software for all the various social media sites we all know and love.

Why would they cancel an account? Is this people doing something wrong or Twitter having a glitch?

There was a bit of a flutter around the blogosphere over twitter recently several accounts were terminated because for some reason (wrongly or rightly) they got labeled as spam.

I haven’t heard of this service but I can see its usefulness. Do you backup regularly?

I discovered it only just this week, and did my first backup the day before Tw change their UI. I’ll maybe do a backup after after 50 new contacts are added…so it could be some time before the next one.

Having mentioned this back in September and done a backup myself. I thought it was time to update my archive. So, I logged in again and TwitterSafe is reporting that I have just 198 followers. That’s wrong. Twitter today is reporting I have 298! It could be some kind of caching glitch, so I’ll clear and try again later. In the meantime I’m “sciencebase” on twitter if you’d like to try and be may #299 and my #300…
