Lost Windows

February 5th, 2007 · by David Bradley

Have you ever lost a window? Frame gone astray? You can see the logo and program name in the Windows taskbar, but clicking it seems to do nothing. It’s still running in Task Manager, but the program’s Window has gone walkabout. Closing it with a right-click and an X, and then restarting it, is a pain, and often doesn’t make it reappear. Right-click on it in the taskbar again and choose “Restore”, still doesn’t work…

So, how do you retrieve the missing window?

Well, first close any other active programs (unless they’re essential to what you’re doing at the time), leaving just the errant program in the taskbar. Now, right-click the taskbar itself and choose “Cascade Windows”. This should bring up that seemingly missing program once again. Adjust its window size to taste by grabbing the chevron in the bottom right-hand corner of the window with a left-click and when you’ve got it how you like it, close the program with the X in the upper right, not forgetting to save any open files first.

Now, when you re-open the program it should appear with the window size as you left it in the last step. Problem solved.

This happens to me quite frequently with the old Ipswitch FTP program, which I still use for uploading to certain sites and am loathe to abandon in favor any of the new, trendy FTP programs like Core etc.
