Ladies, what’s your color?
January 8th, 2010 by David Bradley >> 4 Comments
Apparently, they’re keeping it quiet? What’s that, you say? The bra color meme on Facebook, that’s what. The ladies are revealing one of their little secrets by updating their Facebook status with just one word. A color. A personal color. The color of the brassiere…
Why?
Well, it’s all in aid of breast cancer awareness, apparently. Kind of like wearing the pink ribbon or a wristband, but more virtual. It seems that they’re sharing the message that ladies should update their status, but not tell the men! Well, men also suffer from this disease, strange as that may seem, I’ve known personally two men to die from it, But, that aside, is such a secretive meme likely female Facebook friends is anything to go by, it certainly is. It’s inevitable that the mainstream media will latch on to it sooner or later and then it will go truly viral before fizzling out like most memes. Before it does though, here’s hoping it boosts the “brand” awareness for breast cancer.
No doubt some unscrupulous but enterprising social media gurus are already registering appropriate Twitter names and websites to exploit the meme as its reach widens.
By the way, if I were and could – Red.
More on the campaign – what if you wear no bra? He just doesn’t understand Campaigning in Ann Arbor The Searchenginewatch take on the meme.

Geeky ladies could go the extra inch and display the pantone color in their Facebook status instead, of course – http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/colorfinder.aspx

I didn’t think this was a very good idea. If no one knows what you are referring to, how does it bring awareness to the cause? If anything, is succeeded in getting men thinking about bras and breasts.

I assumed that the idea was to get people sharing the meme in a kind of secretive way and so make it a more attractive meme than simply shouting out, “Hey girls, look at my bra!” I also assumed that the instigators would be hoping for media attention, of which they’re getting a little. But, yes I think it probably has succeeded in getting men thinking about bras and breasts…in a week when scientists claimed the G-spot doesn’t exist it’s kind of a consolation prize of sorts…

I think this was a good idea, and saw quite a few women updating their status on facebook with a color – and I had no idea what it was.
