Italian river ‘full of cocaine’

August 5th, 2005 · by David Bradley

The BBC’s at it again. In a report on the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, they quote the researchers as claiming at least 1500kg of cocaine are consumed in the Po basin each year: Italian river ‘full of cocaine’, but, adds the BBC, that’s “3307lb”. Where does that increased precision in the weight of cocaine come from? They should have gone the whole hog and quoted it as “3306.9339328lb” the value revealed by the units converter at onlineconversion.com.
