How to Open Banned Sites
June 13th, 2007 · by David Bradley >> 167 Comments
Surfing at school or work? Company blocking your access? Parents enabled website blocking? Stuck behind a strict firewall? There are lots of ways around the problem so that you can get to the sites you want to see without those cybernannies tying your hands…
phproxy.org is “dedicated to bringing you fast web browsing from behind web filters”. Simply tap in the URL of that banned site you really must see, it could be Facebook, MySpace, Youtube, or a renegade blogger behind enemy lines, and you will be able to access it with no problems. More seriously, the proxy allows you to visit a site anonymously because it is the proxy itself that is visiting the banned site not you, and so keeps your browsing hidden from prying eyes allowing you to protect your online identity.
Such a proxy also allows you to visit sites that have banned your IP. This might be a forum or just a website or blog from which you or other users on your IP range (whether on your school or company network or your ISP account) have been barred access. The proxy server is an open gateway between your web destination and you.
Other proxies exist, such as www.the-cloak.com (please make sure you include the hyphen in that URL or you will be in for a shock), and the proxy.org site provides a shipload more.
More on an additional approach (Psiphon) here – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psiphon
Of course, we should add a disclaimer at this point, please don’t use proxies or anonymizers to break the law or to cause malice and please don’t abuse the service as they are usually free.
Check back soon for a new post on how to access banned sites using nothing more than an online translation service! And, no you won’t have to learn Mongolian or Swahili to use it.

yah, doesn't work // Jun 13, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Chances are if you are behind a corporate firewall and can’t access your oh so important myspace page, chances are that you’re also blocked from using a proxy
David Bradley // Jun 13, 2007 at 8:16 pm
You could be right Mr Work. Any readers care to try phproxy from behind a heavy-duty firewall and report back?
Antony Williams // Jun 17, 2007 at 1:36 am
The-Cloak is certainly one way to do this..the other one I recommend is anonymouse. SInce I am in the software business I have found that esteemed colleagues in my market space have banned our domain from accessing. How silly is this in this day and age especially with such services available to help navigate around such blocks…

both of those websites are blocked here at my college so they were useless to me
David Bradley // Jul 25, 2007 at 8:01 am
Charli, phproxy and the-cloak themselves are blocked? That is unfortunate. I am sure an enterprising young student can work out the search terms needed to look for alternatives.

Guys …. I have a better alternative to Orkut……………………………………………………………………………. FACEBOOK…Get registered…
David Bradley // Aug 1, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Sure thing, Facebook beats Orkut for most people. Anyone got any experience of not being able to access it from where they are. I know lots of employers are banning Facebook use, but don’t know whether or not that ban applies to Orkut. For more on when Facebook, Okut and blogging gets you fired.

I’m unable to access gtalk it is blocked here, we have a firewall on this site could you help me in providing a proxy site for gtalk
David Bradley // Aug 22, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Natasha, I suspect it is very unlikely that a proxy access route exists for services other than web pages, GTalk (Google Talk) as it is not a website.
However, there are various tools out there that allow you to access different instant messenger services, such as Gaim or Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/), you could try one of those, it’s possible that your SysOp doesn’t have that one blocked via the firewall (or fireball you mentioned originally and I fixed)

kyle, can you give us a clue as to what, where, and how you are banned from seeing your online friends?
David Bradley // Sep 20, 2007 at 11:34 am
How about this approach, pinched from the Digital Inspiration site – Use a redirector like tinyurl.com or snipurl.com. Paste the banned URL into either of those sites to generate a tiny or snip url and then use that to visit the site. Often the address doesn’t change in the address box, so may circumvent the block on your system

David Bradley // Sep 22, 2007 at 12:10 pm
Ajay, I’ve approved your comment. But, a quick warning to potential users of your system, I got an invalid certificate when I tried to open one of your links. Anyone with more daring-do who gives it a try could perhaps report back on an security issues they see. I am a bit wary that this is a phishing page and users might be duped. I’m also very dubious of any claims to disable firewalls before opening a site. You have been warned!
That said, pagemod is banned in the UAE anyway…
db
Ajay // Sep 22, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Hey David.
There are many IPs..which we used to provide dynamic requests so that if any IP gets blocked ppl can surf through the open IPs.
Some are tunneled thru secure and others through ordinary ones.So the certificate for the main domain is shared between our open Ips and pagemod.com and also a a blog v-funny.com to fool admins to get them into thinking ppl are surfing blogs(by just looking into the URL).
Phishing attempt well definitely not we were once the most used proxy in UAE till it got blocked but couldnt strike back as well as before
due to repeated DDOS on our servers (which of crse is fine now.)as we shifted to other servers and have cisco firewalls too installed.
I know its blocked in UAE.Thats y i have provided some new domains.which will help to access them and the pagemod.com:1234 weburl will only work for home users(mostly in UAE{tested} and not for office users as their firewall will have blocked access to http thru other ports. So if disabled it will work.
and as i said b4 secure server certificate is just shared between our IPs itself.
I know its a bit loong explanation coz i was a bit worried by your comments coz its the first time i have got such a feedback after these many months.

Okay. Here’s the deal. If you cannot open a particular site, please leave more details in your comment. Specifically – where you are trying to access the site from and which site it is. Also, please tell us what you have already tried and confirm that you have worked through all the various possibilities outlined in this post. Once you’ve done that, then I or another reader might then be able to help.

Think facebook is about to be banned in the UAE, it has been out of service for 2 days now, though my friends who apparently have a London server in their office are still able to access it. I have tried both proxys mentioned above. Both are banned in the UAE, along with pretty much everything else. Talk over messenger very rarely works and Skype is also banned. Westerners beginning to feel extremely isolated over here…
Keith // Oct 1, 2007 at 4:51 pm
OK tried all the usual proxys – but unless they are dynamic no go as the same people who find them sell the info to the firewall people… does anyone know of any way to get past the UAE Etisalat proxy/firewall so I can keep in touch with my friends n family on Facebook?
David Bradley // Oct 1, 2007 at 6:04 pm
Keith, Nicola, everybody. It does seem like almost every loophole is now closing on people in UAE. It seems that fewer and fewer of the options given in this post now work. If anyone has any new ideas, please post them here. Maybe there is still one workaround that actually works.

David Bradley // Oct 11, 2007 at 10:11 am
Rohan, that message is caused by a worm that has infected your computer.
Here’s how to fix it
rohan // Oct 12, 2007 at 6:48 am
i’ve got another method .press alt+ctrl+del windows task manager will open, click on new task, a new window appears type http://www.orkut.com it opens your default internet browser and you can access the site, minimize the task manager
David Bradley // Oct 12, 2007 at 7:45 am
Rohan, that probably works to circumvent the call, but you must realise: your computer security has been compromised by a worm, virus, or trojan, which is why you have seen that particular “error” message. It’s not just a case of getting around it. You need to remove it, urgently. It could be doing far worse things that popping up mock error messages, it could be sending your bank details and other information to a hacker. Visit the link I mentioned, get the fix. Be safe.

Well, Thanga, your query is not about a site being banned, so presumably none of the tips on this post helped. Without additional information it is impossible to tell what kinds of settings may have been changed.
Did you install any software, antispyware programs perhaps? Did you edit your hosts file? Did you simply use the wrong password? Are you on a network for someone else is admin and who may have installed a new firewall/filter system? Presumably, you can access all other sites fine?
A clue would be useful.

Well the reason some of those websites don’t work is because of the filters, some advanced filters automatically detect and block these sites because they contain the word proxy, surfing, etc.

Amit Agarwal has a nice post on how to do stuff like watching Youtube videos, Instant Messaging from within Office, reading blogs even if there is a company ban on websites, listen to music on your home computer from work and a few other things. But just make sure you don’t get caught or can cover your back if you do, I’m not joking, the repercussions could be serious if you break company rules…or the law.

Here is a proxy i use “www.skunkrox.org”
David Bradley // Feb 8, 2008 at 11:37 am
Hotspot Shield is getting lots of great feedback. I’ve tried it myself and it circumvents nannying firewalls quite well, including the lingerie filters on OpenDNS systems, which meant shopping for Valentine’s was relatively painless on my SOHO network.
db
David Bradley // Feb 8, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I doubt very much that MySpace or any other site that requires a login would recommend anyone use a proxy to access its services. The proxy represents something of a security risk to those sites as well as a security risk to your own personal details and login. To be frank, these sites are banned in school and in the workplace for a reason…you’re there to learn or work, not to socialize, surely?

@Twon – I’m afraid you’re stuck, then. Obviously, whoever doesn’t want you to access those site has battened down the hatches pretty tight. Of course, you could just wait till you get home rather than wasting time on stuff you’re not supposed to be using while at school or work.

Clare, running a virtual private network (VPN) with Hotspotshield or something similar is probably the only way to get around the issue, but VPNs may be banned too. Can’t it wait till you get home? It puzzles me as to why people who are at school or at work are so desperate to get on to their social media sites. But, then I work from home so it’s not an issue at all for me, there’s no boss or teacher to block me

That sounds like a scripting error. Log out, clear your browser cache, and log back in, try the friend again. Make sure you’ve enabled scripts for Facebook if you’re running an addin like NoScript.

Can anyone access Orkut in UAE? Care to share techniques?
David Bradley // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:40 am
One extra tip. Some filtering software is not smart enough to realize that you could use the secure form of the URL. So, instead of typing http://myblockedsocialspaceburk.com, or similar, try https://myblockedsocialspaceburk.com, substituting the actual domain you wish to access for my silly made up site.

Rajesh – I think you need to find a way to logon to Orkut other than at your place of work. A cybercafe perhaps? Home?
RAJESH // Aug 22, 2008 at 10:32 am
sir i am unable to go cybercafe because i am going to office 7.30 am and came back near about 9.00 pm and at my room have no PC to use so please tell me a solution to who i can access orkut at office.
Tnanx.
David Bradley // Aug 22, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Don’t you get a lunch break? Those are long hours you’re working. But more to the point, if your boss doesn’t want you accessing such systems then there’s not a lot you can do about it and maybe you shouldn’t as you could end up getting fired.

David I have read all the questions and answers listed above.I would say they could use ultrasurf a powerfull proxy tool which will bypass all the filters. It’s 100% effective in UAE. You can download it from http://www.downloads.com. And its free.
BUTCH // Oct 10, 2008 at 8:31 pm
hi,
i am using anchor hotspot here in UAE but 3 days ago its already prohibited and banned….is there any other way….or an equal software that can open banned sites.
thank you
Alina Mary // Oct 12, 2008 at 6:49 pm
I have used many proxy sites over the years be it PHP CGI glype watever,
Nowadays none seem to bypass the ever strong filters{ websense, K9 , bess},
some things one should observe when looking for a proxy site:
-Shouldn’t be a .info { filters by default block them coz most are proxy sites}
-Shouldnt contain the words proxy or others like myspace,orkut,bebo in it. { they keyword filter those}
-On the safe side should be a SSL encrypted ones {https sites filter find them difficult to scan}
-Should be a reputable provider and provide fresh domains update {So that proxy owners dont steal our information,
face the fact domains will get blocked eventually, so its necessary to provide new ones.}
-I would recommend CGI proxy , even if they are time consuming they give the desired results.

Currently i use foreverunblocked from pagemod.com proxies. They have both CGI and PHP proxies in them. Very Reputable,SSL enabled, does provide new domains by just sending a mail to pagemod@gmail.com

David Bradley // Oct 23, 2008 at 7:45 am
Ajay, the link you provided, is not secure, it generates an “invalid security certificate”, so I have removed the URL. But, more to the point it was a “.info” link, the kind of link you recommend not using! In general, your comments are acceptable and I was interested to visit your blog and see mention of GMail canned responses.

At my school we have “Netspace” which just filter rejects pretty much 70% of what we try do. The kids have used Gnomefort.com but I’ve just tried it recently and it is now filter rejected. Most of the people go onto MySpace through something else but I’m not sure of the site they use and every time I want to check something up it’s filtered. I’ve tried most of the links you have given me but Netspace has already rejected them -.-
Can anyone else please suggest another site to bypass all the filters thanks.

Ultrasurf (mentioned by someone above) works very well. It is a small self-contained program that requires no installation–just open it and go.
If you use MSIE nothing else is required. If you use Firefox or some other browser you will need to go into the browser’s network configuration and set the proxy to IP 127.0.0.1 Port 9666.
There are a few sites–not many–that Ultrasurf’s own servers block. But popular sites such as Facebook are no problem.

Jim // Oct 1, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Wow what a great thread. I’d like to make a couple of points that might help,
Firstly the most content blocking/filtering technology now uses combinations of specific urls and analyses the content of your browsing (remember HTTP is all in clear text) as such a remote proxy won’t help you that much with the likes of websense.
You do need to use some sort of encryption to bypass the content filters like websense for instance the vpns mentioned by david.
Most big organisations willl have ensured you can’t modify the proxy settings in your browser, and their firewall will block all outgoing internet traffic – ie on 80 and 8080 to anything but the IP address of the official proxy server.
You either have to tunnel through the proxy or leave through another port that isn’t blocked – e.g an SSL or SSH tunnel.
Cheers
Jim

Facebook, youtube and various other sites have been banned in China. I’ve only had access to them by using a proxy client called Tor. Tor is a user-based proxy which can only work providing some one bridges your connection to the host. Unfortunately I havn’t been able to access the Tor server for a few days now as no one is able to bridge my connection. Just some advice though; it has worked in the past for me and i suspect it should do for others too.
