Handling significant figures

March 21st, 2005 · by David Bradley

Business news just in tells us a new Gehl telescopic handler has a maximum capacity of 5000-7000 lbs (Telescopic Handler ) capacity. Great news we thought, until we saw that this equates to 2268-3175 kg. Also of interest, the power is 58 hp (43 kW) to 101 hp (75 kW). 101? Wow that extra 1 kW must make all the difference, being a third of the power of a domestic kettle. Even more intriguing is the max lift height - 16′2″ (4.9 m) to 22′7″ (6.9 m). OK, in the manufacturer’s spec they’d probably have to give values to the inch, but in a news item 5-6 metres, would do for me.
