GTalk Cannot Open Websense

July 7th, 2008 · by David Bradley

Google cannot talkA lot of Sciencetext visitors are searching for the phrase “GTalk Cannot Open Websense”. Well, GTalk is Google’s instant messenger application, in case you didn’t know already, but you may not have heard of Websense. Websense is a web security and internet filtering company, and a not particularly savvy one at that it seems.

When I visited their website to check them out on behalf of Sciencetext readers, I was confronted with the following message:

// Provide alternate content for browsers that do not support scripting // or for those that have scripting disabled. Alternate HTML content should be placed here. This content requires the Adobe Flash Player. Get Flash

To me that looks like they got their code wrong and didn’t anticipate visitors arriving with NoScript enabled in Firefox 3. “Websense provides a unique combination of Web, content, and user intelligence to stop threats at their source, and accurately control the “who, what, where, and how” of network security.” they say, well I wouldn’t trust them with my network security if they cannot even REM out a line in their html source to prevent such messages showing up inadvertently when I browse their site.

Anyway, back to the “gtalk cannot open websense” queries. I can only assume that my visitors are trying to use GTalk but discovering that Websense is running something on their network to block users from accessing their accounts. Perhaps it’s their school, parents, boss, who knows? Anyway, for information on how to open banned sites, first check out this page.

If nothing on that page works, then check out the following: Bypass Websense, how to bypass Websense, and proxies to bypass Websense.
