Google Goes Offline

June 23rd, 2007 · by David Bradley

New up on my Google account today, was a link entitled simply “Offline” with a “new” tag right next to it in red. Curiosity took the feline to its tenth so I thought I’d click it and see where it took me. Apparently, this new feature allows you to read the 2000 most recent items in your RSS newsfeed once they have been pulled without you having to be connected to the internet. Another great reason to subscribe to the Sciencetext newsfeed with Google Reader, you can keep up with all the latest posts while you are on vacation. Oh, hold on, didn’t I suggest not keeping up with blogs while on vacation, just yesterday? Well, okay, you can keep up with just this one, if you must.

To use the offline features of Google Reader, you will first need to install the Google Gears plug-in for your browser. Easy enough to do and works a treat. So, enjoy yourself offline.

THere are a number of readers out there but by far Google Reader is the best for me. The ability to now go offline is a great feature enhancement for those moments in Starbucks when the wireless goes down and the coffee brewers are more focused on venti, vanilla and voicing their opinions than getting the wireless up and running.

Nice thought Tony, lounging wirelessly in a Starbucks sounds a little more attractive than my incredibly messy office at the moment.

Horrors! The wi-fi goes down in Starbucks?! I’m glad I’m not one of those poseurs who pretend to do proper work there on their fancy Apple laptops. ;)

Totally joking and not making fun of you, Antony!! :)

Ironically, the day this post published on Sciencetext, Google Reader really was offline. They had a temporary outage that meant lots of bloggers suddenly started panicking when they saw their Feedburner stats plummet.
