Feedburner to Google Migration Compulsory
November 26th, 2008 · by David Bradley >> 7 Comments
I received an email allegedly from the Google Adsense team this morning alerting me to the fact that Feedburner, the RSS system, is being subsumed into Google. Now, spelling looked okay, there were no links and the email headers were fine, so taking it on trust that this is genuine. In fact, there’s no reason not to trust that it’s genuine particularly as no action is required on the part of the account holder, anyway.
Here’s what the email had to say:
“We’re contacting you to let you know that we’ll be migrating your FeedBurner account XXXX to your Google Account email XXXX@gmail.com on 12/5/2008.
Please rest assured, this change won’t disrupt your current feeds service. As part of this migration, all of your existing FeedBurner feeds will automatically redirect to Google feeds. You won’t lose any of your current subscribers in the process nor will this affect any email subscriptions.
All of your feeds will be moved to your new account and an initial batch of your most recent 30 days’ traffic stats will also be added. Your entire history, should it go beyond 30 days, will be added at a future date.”
It then goes on to say that once subsumed, absorbed, assimilated, I’ll be able to “take advantage” of AdSense for feeds product.
The important point to note is that “this migration process is required for all publishers.”
Since first posting I’ve heard via a twitter contact @AlCarlton, that the email is legitimate, his account was already transferred.

While I understand why they are doing this I just rebel against anything compulsory. I like your use of borg terminology to describe this.
I have not yet received said email. I believe this is because google is trying to erase my existence from the internet

Well spotted the Trekky reference, Kim. Other people have received this email, some have already been assimilated, it’s happening to others as we speak, it’s only a matter of time.

I never received said email.
So… the servers are moving but the URLs and such are staying the same?

I think they’ve been spitting out the emails for about a month, you’ll probably get one soon. It doesn’t say anything about what’s actually happening just that the system is being subsumed, I presume they’ll do a 301 on all feedburner URLs. I just hope they remember to apply it to MyBrand accounts using feeds.mydomain.com etc

Well, it happened today and all my feeds using mybrand took a massive hit on pingability as the new system requires a CNAME mod, I’ve done that today, so hopefully numbers will bounce back higher than ever tomorrow.

Google pushed me over to their feed system this week. No questions. Subscriber numbers plummeted temporarily on all my Feedburned feeds, but have sprung back up now. There is an issue with myBrand, but that seems to have resolved itself without my having to use the Google recommended settings. So, when the time comes, watch out for those…
