Send strangers to your Facebook fan page

A few weeks ago, I wrote about being a Facebook slut. But, I’ve recently had a change of heart about such parallel virtual relationships and instead of simply throwing open the virtual doors to all putative friends, I’m now sending anyone I don’t actually know who asks to be a friend, to the green room first – the Sciencebase fan page. There they can check out what’s on offer, read others’ comments and see who else is in the entourage, posse, call it what you will.

So…if we don’t actually know each other or haven’t connected elsewhere before and you want to be my friend on Facebook, please check out the Sciencebase fan page first and maybe leave a comment there yourself or connect in some other way, and I’ll do my best to shake your virtual hand and say hello. You never know I might even throw that door wide open, once we get to know each other a little better.

*grins* I wish I had read this ( and the ‘Facebook slut’ one) before my name and face appeared in the media. I too have a Facebook account, but just to try it. I never fancied having 1000 ‘friends’ who write, poke, invite and send me stuff, making it impossible to keep up. (People who really are interested will e-mail, right?) I didn’t know what to do with it, so now it just has a link to my website and twitter account. Nice and easy. Which is how I ‘know’ you by the way. *offers virtual hand*

Following you on Twitter now Hanny…you didn’t leave your Facebook link.

Cool, you’re in my list too.

And wherever I am on the internet, I am with my real name, so I’m sure it’s something like ‘hannyvanarkel’ there too. Let me check… Hm, it’s ‘Hanny Van Arkel’, will that do? :)

After reading http://thomsinger.blogspot.com/2009/12/definition-of-know.html how do you define knowing someone, David? If someone leaves you a comment on this blog, do you know the person? If someone retweets you, is that knowing?

I keep my definition loose. In this day and age virtual acquaintances come in all kinds of flavours.

I am not quite sure I grasp the value of a FB fan page, although I am keeping an eye on a few friends who are trying it out. Oh, and I’m most certainly a Facebook slut, so I’ve become a fan of your page, David – lol!

The value probably depends on what you want out of Facebook. A personal fan page is maybe pointless unless you’re a celeb, but it can be quite useful if you just want to share your blogs and such…

Hi David – we follow each other’s Twitter updates and I’m a fan of the Sciencebase page. I would like to add you as a FB friend – best wishes, Rob Jackson
