Download your Instagram photos and delete your account

Facebook-owned retro snaps site Instagram has shot itself in the foot by adopting new terms of service (as of January 16, 2013) that implies it could sell your photos without your explicit permission and without you receiving a penny. There is, according to @JonSatriani a massive market for unique hipster tee-shirts with Instagram snaps on them 😉

If that annoys you beyond belief then it’s time to download your hoard of blurry and retro-filtered photos and delete your account. I have been using IFTTT to grab a copy of all my Instragram photos as they upload so I have a backup already, but you might like to try Instaport if you want to keep copies before deleting your Instagram account.

Next step is to head over to the Instagram “delete my account” page and follow the instructions.

To be honest, I’m not going to do this just yet, it’s possible that Facebook/Instagram will recognise just how obnoxious they’re being in light of modern attitudes to copyright and creative commons etc and change their minds before the deadline, especially given the massive and growing outcry.
