Download Google Chrome
September 2nd, 2008 · by David Bradley
You can now download Google Chrome here. I initially thought it unlikely that their servers would bear up under the strain of millions of uber geeks clamoring to get their grubby paws on this apparently revolutionary new browser, but I was wrong, it download in less than a minute on 10Mbps cable broadband and is now running on my machine.
Ultimately, this download will close the loop on the internet and will, I suspect, lead the way to a Google operating system that will compete heavily with Microsoft. It will also, no doubt, end up with Google in antitrust disputes and arguing monopolies legislation across the US and Europe.
Interesting, that although news of Google Chrome was leaked on to the web on Labor Day (Google Chrome first mention here September 1) when a Google-authored comic strip was posted “inadvertently”, yeah accidentally on purpose more like…but the end-user license agreement (EULA) is dated August 15, 2008.
Meanwhile, some features as described by Google:
- One box for everything - address bar autosuggests search and web pages.
- Thumbnails of favorite pages instantly displayed
- Shortcuts for your apps - this is where my notion of Chrome being a proto-OS kicks in…
and of course,
- The much vaunted (re IE8’s InPrivate) pr0n tab that leaves no trace of your single-handed browsing.

I had a quick fiddle with Chrome last night, and overall it’s pretty good. I whacked up a few favourite sites, especially ones that like to crash, such as the Colbert Report page. It did crash - it was inevitable - but as each tab in Chrome is a separate process, it didn’t wreck my other browsing windows.
I’m not going to be using it as my primary browser any time soon, however. When it has the extendability of Firefox I might consider it, as it is quick and handles media nicely. I’m not switching from Firefox on Windows yet though.
As Firefox isn’t so hot on OSX, I eagerly await the Chrome for Mac release…
@Jon I’m busy compiling a few cons to offset all the pros that have been listed these last couple of days. No RSS autodiscovery, no scripting support and no Mac version to name but a few…
No MAC version OH NOZ!!! Duh Weruld iz gonna endz!
Doesn’t bother me Bill…I’m on an XP PC, soon to switch to Linux. They will release a Mac and Linux version soon.
I’ll be the happiest man if Chrome had a counterpart of Firefox’s Firebug extension. Nonetheless, it is an awesome browser, especially the incognito thing
I tried installing it on my Windows Vista and it also work fine. It’s been weeks now and so far I haven’t encountered any problems yet. It looks like this will soon become the king of browsers.
