Clearing out the Crap

March 2nd, 2007 · by David Bradley

Do you ever get the feeling that your once vast hard drive is finding it harder and harder to squeeze in all those videos, digital photos, divx downloads and what have you? Me too! One way to free up space is to clear your browser cache, delete temporary and back up files, empty the recycle bin (hey, sorry we’re on XP here, not a dirty Mac in sight), and generally do a lot of HDD housework. Some people love it others hate it. Me I hate it, and I’m guessing most Sig Fig readers do too.

So, here’s a little hint that can help clean up your online life - get Crap Cleaner (pardon my French…)

Crap Cleaner

It has to be the most space-hoppiest program out there for saving time and space. I run it on an almost regular basis and almost every time it manages to retrieve at least a few hundred megabytes of space. The first time I ran it on my wife’s PC it clawed back almost a gigabyte. Actually, it reported a clearance of 999.9 Mb in 24.685 seconds, which both look like dubiously specific, precise, and accurate values to me. But, if it was 30 seconds and approximately a gigabyte, I’d be happy and assume they’re simply extracting the urine, a la “Sig Figs” themselves.

CCleaner to give it’s (SFW*) name is free, although they ask for a donation if you go in via the CCleaner.com site rather than their mirror at FileHippo.
