Bug it!

March 14th, 2005 · by David Bradley

Remember the Y2K bug? Wasn’t quite the electronic disaster the media claimed it would be. But, for those who hope to be around in the year 2038, they could witness its evil offspring in that year when the year 2038 bug kicks in! Most computers use a standard 4-byte integer for to count seconds, which means 31 bits, storing a value of 231. The remaining bit is the sign (+/-). So, when the second count reaches 2147483647, it will wrap to -2147483648. This will according to 2038bug.com occur at Tue Jan 19 03:14:07 2038. Computers prone to the bug will then display the date and time as Fri Dec 13 20:45:52 1901….how scary is that? Just have to wait and see won’t we (I say we, I’ll be 72 when it happens!)
