Ancient spectroscopists

November 8th, 2006 · by David Bradley

What do the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Smithsonian/NASA, the US Defense Technical Information Center, Southern & Eastern African Network of Analytical Chemists (SEANAC), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Southampton University, and the American Chemical Society (ACS) have in common?

They’ve all pulled details of an ancient analytical technique known as Roman Spectroscopy.

Indeed, they are not the only ones. A Google for this phrase reveals at last 431 pages describing this fascinating technique, which predates Raman spectroscopy by two millennia, apparently.

Yes, I know it’s not a sig-fig issue, it’s just a typo, but it was quite amusing to see it.
